Dying gaul

Detail of the famous sculpture in the Musei Capitolini in Rome.

A Gaul, a Celt or a Galatian, dying on the field near Pergamum. The original is supposed to be a bronze sculpture ordered by the king after having defeated the foreigners. That's the spirit.

As we were having some famous statues in Rome, I felt this one couldn't be left out. To see it is to understand the story and feel sorry for the able young man we se here in his last moments, but for the sculptor who made it into an image that survives the centuries and lasts forever.

It was actually a short moment, be it the last in the life of the model, but the artist turned it into a glimpse of eternity, that we can behold today, and marvel about.
