Dirk of Babylon
To keep his literary career separate from his professional practice – his often clearly autobiographical prose that refuses to shy away from taboos could affect his incorruptibility as a doctor – Peter van Breusegem chose a pseudonym when publishing his first novel.
Dirk of Babylon was born.
Peter, aka Dirk of Babylon, grew up with literature. His childhood was marked by his mother’s illness. His books allowed him to escape from reality for a while and immerse himself in other, new and sometimes strange worlds.
Literature fascinated him. Even when he got older and started working as a family physician. Again and again he wanted to take up the pen to write things down himself. Things he experienced, what he thought about, what he dreamed about. Things, which should reach the outside world.
For a period he devoted himself to writing, but his vocation as a physician asserted itself again. After several years, he again traded his full-time career as an author for that of family physician.
Meanwhile, Peter and Dirk have become two people in one body: GP Peter van Breusegem by day, author Dirk van Babylon by night.
