Found

“Found” is not the word—
Rather: encountered.

To find is to discover what you sought;
Desire precedes it.
Encountering happens unprepared.
You must then see what it is.

That is why Ludwig Wittgenstein
Spoke of “the world I encountered,”
Not “the world I found.”

Of what I find I have an image;
Of what I encounter, none. And what I think
Of the world I encountered—
You would rather not know.

Dumbfounded by human cruelty,
A little more each day.
Amazed at divine generosity,
And that, too, more and more.

The splendor of unconquerable nature:
Its plants and animals,
The many spiders in the garden
Who clearly have enough to eat.

All this goes on of itself,
Without anyone losing sleep.

Tomorrow they will lay the driveway
And set the gabion baskets in place.
