Great Mercy, a Salad!

Great mercy—a glorious salad!
It’s high time for a vegetarian ballad
in praise of the mixed vegetable salad,
a worthy theme for an aubade
to the King and to his consort.

Listen to an organic farmer from Hoogmade,
calling to us from atop a barricade,
in an unsprayed tirade,
urging us to forsake our meat:

“Take a good look at your waistline!
Seek advice from a dietitian!
Fill your vegetable drawer today!
Still eating factory-farmed chicken? Good heavens!
Meat-eater, turn away from evil:
vegetables have never done anyone harm!”

Note: This is the first poem in a series devoted to vegetables. A friendly warning to meat-eaters: it is surely time to come to the rescue of the vegetarian way of life.
