The Mystery of Mons

In The Mystery of Mons, Patrick Bernauw and photographer Marc Borms take you to the Walloon city that became world-famous during the First World War because of a stubborn legend: that of the Angels of Mons. The story began with a short story by Arthur Machen, in which heavenly warriors suddenly came to the aid of British troops. Soon fiction became reality: eyewitnesses, newspapers, and soldiers testified as if the angels had truly appeared.

Bernauw and Borms use this fascinating premise as the starting point for an interactive city game in book form. Through enigmatic photographs, clues, and texts, you yourself become a player in the mystery. As you explore Mons, a quest unfolds leading you past historical sites, hidden symbolism, and ancient urban legends.

The book thus combines historical facts, local lore, and modern game formats—a guide, a story, and a treasure hunt in one.
