Trisomy 21
The Different Ones
Where shall we bring him, I wonder again—
Take, say, the Down Syndrome Foundation.
It comes from a duplicated chromosome.
Though lagging behind, they are seldom gloomy.
Cheerful and happy, enjoying themselves well,
Together in day care or home.
They express themselves in limited idiom,
Which sounds to us rather remarkable.
They themselves do not feel so handicapped.
And truly you cannot blame them for that.
Though marked by a genetic condition,
They are by no means unbearably dull!
They are sincere, their souls unspoiled,
And they need not worry about paying bills.
