Dr. Peter Van Breusegem

Peter Van Breusegem (b. 1956) grew up in Liedekerke and went to high school at Sint-Jozefscollege in Aalst. His childhood was marked by the illness of his mother – who suffered from multiple sclerosis. His home situation encouraged Peter to study medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven after high school.

In his final years at the Faculty of Medicine, Peter completed an internship in Zaire (now Congo), before graduating with honors as a doctor of medicine, surgery and obstetrics.

In the early 1980s, Peter began his practice in Uccle, in the midst of the AIDS epidemic. The epidemic particularly affected him and inspired him to step into AIDS activism. Thus, Peter co-founded The Foundation and has worked for years to make homosexuality and AIDS discussable in the media and society.

Peter built a practice in Brussels where everyone was welcome – regardless of orientation, gender, origin. Today, with more than 40 years of experience under his belt, he has a cabinet in Aalst.

“I have chosen to remain active as a physician for several more years. This is based on two considerations that particularly appeal to me.

On the one hand, there are the countless people I have had the privilege of caring for over the course of forty years of a family medicine career. A strong bond has developed with some of them. They may still continue to consult me and can easily make an appointment by phone or online for as long as I can continue to do so.

On the other hand, I am no longer accepting new patients, but it may happen that you have a special question or a problem that you cannot go to your own family doctor with. Then I would like to get acquainted via e-mail first and you can tell me what it is about. That way I can see if I think I can be useful with my knowledge and experience.

Certainly when it comes to the redress of injustice, I still wish to be available, and also in view of the end of life or when other moral or ethical issues arise where a physician’s view may be significant.

As I have always tried to do, I will move within the boundaries of law, science and respect for the human dignity of everyone regardless of origin, color, gender or orientation.”
