About us
This website is a place for anyone who likes to read, to think and, now and then, to pause at a well-written sentence. Here you will find essays, stories, poetry and reflections on literature, philosophy, people and society. Sometimes serious, sometimes light-hearted, but always written from the same conviction: that language is a way of understanding the world better.
The website grew up around Dirk of Babylon, the literary alter ego of general practitioner Peter Van Breusegem. By day he works as a doctor, in the evening as a writer. Those two worlds – medical practice and literary imagination – run side by side on this site. That is why you will find both philosophical and literary texts and accessible medical articles rooted in science and hands-on experience.
Along the way, a small circle of authors has grown around this website. Each of them brings their own voice, style and fascinations. One writes poetry, another essays or stories. Some seek out the play of language, others the depth of ideas. What connects them is a shared love of literature and the desire to share their thoughts.
Anyone wandering through these pages may come across all sorts of things: a poem, an essay, a translation, a medical explanation or an unexpected thought.
Read, wander and think along… because in the end a website only really comes alive when readers “get involved”.
