Charles Bradley (1902\u20131979), qui travaillait dans l\u2019une des premi\u00e8res cliniques de p\u00e9dopsychiatrie des \u00c9tats-Unis, dans l\u2019\u00c9tat de Rhode Island, d\u00e9crivit dans les ann\u00e9es trente que l\u2019utilisation de benzedrine chez des enfants pr\u00e9sentant des probl\u00e8mes comportementaux entra\u00eenait une am\u00e9lioration de leurs performances dans l\u2019institution, tant sur le plan du comportement que sur celui des r\u00e9sultats scolaires.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rien n\u2019en fut fait pendant un quart de si\u00e8cle, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que les recherches men\u00e9es dans le dernier quart du si\u00e8cle dernier jettent les bases du traitement pharmaceutique actuel des patients atteints de TDAH. Au d\u00e9but, ce traitement fut tr\u00e8s controvers\u00e9, car il s\u2019agit malheureusement de pr\u00e9parations figurant sur la liste des produits dopants, le l\u00e9gislateur ayant estim\u00e9 qu\u2019elles \u00e9taient susceptibles d\u2019\u00eatre utilis\u00e9es \u00e0 mauvais escient et d\u2019entra\u00eener une d\u00e9pendance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Il s\u2019agit le plus souvent d\u2019amph\u00e9tamines, des substances qui interviennent directement dans le m\u00e9tabolisme de l\u2019adr\u00e9naline. Nous avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 rencontr\u00e9 l\u2019adr\u00e9naline lorsque nous parlions de l\u2019anxi\u00e9t\u00e9. Elle est notamment s\u00e9cr\u00e9t\u00e9e par les glandes surr\u00e9nales, mais elle joue \u00e9galement un r\u00f4le important dans la transmission des influx entre les cellules nerveuses du cerveau.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les stimulants provoquent des manifestations typiques de l\u2019adr\u00e9naline, telles qu\u2019une acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration du rythme cardiaque et de la respiration, de l\u2019agitation et une sensation d\u2019excitation. Ils procurent un \u00e9tat d\u2019euphorie que certains trouvent agr\u00e9able. Une personne atteinte de TDAH y r\u00e9agit tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9remment. Le produit a un effet calmant, parce que la personne peut d\u00e9sormais mieux se concentrer et s\u2019adapter au contexte scolaire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pendant un certain temps, on a cri\u00e9 au scandale et cette question a suscit\u00e9 de nombreuses pol\u00e9miques, mais il est d\u00e9sormais admis qu\u2019une prescription dans l\u2019indication appropri\u00e9e, chez des enfants atteints de TDAH, conduit \u00e0 de meilleurs r\u00e9sultats scolaires, en plus d\u2019un comportement plus agr\u00e9able et d\u2019un plus grand bonheur familial. Il serait dommage de refuser aux enfants et aux adultes qui en ont besoin un m\u00e9dicament qui fait tant de bien au petit groupe pour lequel son usage est autoris\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pourquoi le ferait-on ? Pour des raisons morales ? Tout a commenc\u00e9 avec un m\u00e9decin qui prescrivait des substances, \u00e0 des enfants qui plus est. Des substances qui, selon nos normes, sont l\u00e9galement interdites, pour une indication dont personne n\u2019avait entendu parler \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque. Cela suscita beaucoup de r\u00e9sistance. Finalement, ce sont les m\u00e8res qui ont constat\u00e9 que leurs enfants progressaient gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ces traitements, et peu \u00e0 peu, il s\u2019est n\u00e9anmoins \u00e9tabli que les enfants et les adolescents prennent ces substances.<\/span><\/p>\n
