Une habitude qu\u2019il conserverait toute sa vie. C\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e9galement un \u00e9tudiant brillant, mais il souffrait d\u2019asthme, une affection respiratoire qui l\u2019obligea \u00e0 interrompre ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 plusieurs reprises et qui continuerait \u00e0 lui causer des probl\u00e8mes tout au long de sa vie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1898, il obtint son dipl\u00f4me de m\u00e9decin, mais partit ensuite volontairement combattre en Afrique du Sud lors de la Seconde Guerre des Boers. Il en revint profond\u00e9ment d\u00e9\u00e7u et devint un pathologiste, un m\u00e9decin et un enseignant estim\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lorsque la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale \u00e9clata, il devint chirurgien de brigade et major dans l\u2019arm\u00e9e canadienne. Lors de la deuxi\u00e8me bataille d\u2019Ypres, en 1915, qui commen\u00e7a par une attaque au gaz chlor\u00e9, il soigna les innombrables bless\u00e9s qui avaient \u00e9chapp\u00e9 de justesse \u00e0 une terrible mort par asphyxie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019ami de McCrae, le lieutenant Alexis Helmer, y perdit la vie. Selon la tradition, sa mort inspira le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre po\u00e8me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Flanders Fields<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, que McCrae \u00e9crivit en mai 1915 et qui fut publi\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois dans le magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus tard cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, McCrae fut transf\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00e0 Boulogne-sur-Mer, en France, o\u00f9 il mourut le 28 janvier 1918 d\u2019une pneumonie compliqu\u00e9e d\u2019une m\u00e9ningite.
