I<\/b><\/p>\n

She belongs with fruit, yet lies among sprouts.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Her waterworks cannot be stopped;<\/span>
\n<\/span>From the crisper drawer comes sobbing sighs\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>Lament and weeping fill the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the tomato, weeping copious tears,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Pausing now and then to blow her nose.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She can only whistle toward the fruit drawer,<\/span>
\n<\/span>And cannot cough her way out of grief.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She belongs with fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enough of drivel and misty spray!<\/span>
\n<\/span>How shall she voice resentment and distress,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Wounded in her state as banished fruit,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Exiled to this pauper\u2019s hut\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>For she is no vegetable. Amen.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She belongs with fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n

II<\/b><\/p>\n

I belong with fruit. I cannot stand vegetables.<\/span>
\n<\/span>What am I doing sighing in this drawer,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Surrounded by tubers, lettuces, herbs\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>With their coarse manners and earthy scent?<\/span><\/p>\n

I must endure their scorn,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The butt of mockery and rustic jokes.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I would leave, but cannot flee.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Yet something must be said.<\/span><\/p>\n

I belong with fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enough of all these rumors!<\/span>
\n<\/span>I am no vegetable\u2014I belong with fruits!<\/span>
\n<\/span>I do not lie well here, and so<\/span>
\n<\/span>I reach again the same conclusion:<\/span>
\n<\/span>I belong in the orchard\u2019s thicket of delights.<\/span>
